When she placed the call to Hank, the sound of his voice provoked a grin on Kate’s face as she delightedly filled him in with answers to his many questions, and she basked in his praise of her first two articles. Kate knew that Reardon was not a man to lavish praise on anyone, so she was certain that she’d exceeded his expectations, and that delighted her.

She suspected that Hank had limited time, so she tackled her problem right away. “I’m calling you because I’ve got an issue with this third article, and I don’t know how to handle it. I’ll quickly explain. I need to get back to my subject—at least according to my title—and this ‘murder’ thing feels like I’m trying to grab a handful of water.” Kate had heard Reardon’s deep chuckle at her last comment, but Kate couldn’t see a lot of humor here; she didn’t have a lot of time—as usual—and felt frustrated. “As you had predicted, Hank, Lindsey refused to meet with me. I wrote, called, and at Eleanor’s suggestion, asked McCall’s lawyer, Todd Kensington, to intervene. Nothing worked. So Todd very generously set up a meeting with her sister, Paula, and I’ve met with her.” Kate paused, considering. “We’ve met three, maybe four times, and … there’s something not right here, Hank. The more I talked with Paula, the stranger she seemed.”

“Strange, how?”

“It’s really hard to explain; she just seems too good, too rehearsed, too controlled, too everything to be real. I understand that she has told her story hundreds of times, and I tried to convince myself that was all it was, but I think there’s more to it—to her. And it’s not good; there’s a robotic quality to the woman that is unnerving. I suppose the flat affect could be caused by medications like antidepressants, and she’s certainly had a plateful of misery handed to her to justify pills; but I get the distinct feeling that it’s all an act. There’s someone else behind the mask. Just once in hours of interviews, I was able to provoke a response.” Kate explained quickly what she had done and that distinct flash of anger or triumph that Kate had seen so briefly.

“What do you want to do then? It sounds as if you’re questioning this whole case or at least the truthfulness of the state’s primary witness?”

Kate let out a long, slow sigh of relief. That was exactly how she felt. She had not read the court transcripts, she had not taken the time to find the court reporter and ask for the transcripts, plus she didn’t know if a journalist had legal access to court transcripts in a criminal case. Now she wished she had taken the time to research all that, but she had only a few days before her deadline.

Reardon spoke again thoughtfully. “Look, Kate, I told you when you were here that I was puzzled about how this whole thing came down; even if Lindsey had used the drug
